From the April, 2009 Newsletter
1.
Rice Cakes - Bodybuilders use rice cakes 10 minutes
before they get on stage. Do you know why? Because they enter the blood
stream so quickly. And as I have talked about before sugar that enters
the blood stream quickly raises that fat storing hormone insulin. A rice
cake is like having a candy, it may not have a lot of calories but it
is pure sugar.
2.
Soups - I placed soup in my list because it
surprised me one day when looking at those Campbell soups that the
ingredients had MSG in it. You know the bad stuff that's in Chinese
restaurant windows saying NO MSG. Well MSG is known as the slow poison
and is added to food, not to preserve or for flavoring but to make the
food addictive. Try making your own soups.
3.
Granola Bars - There must be over a million brands
of granola and granola bars. In a 24g bar from Quaker we find 17g of
sugar and starch, 3g of fat and 1g of protein, 1g of fibre and filler.
Not my idea of a healthy snack.
4.
Fruit Yogurt - 1 Yoplait yogurt packs 28g of sugar.
If you're going to have yogurt make sure it's plain and you can add your
own berries to it.
5.
Cereals - The cereal industry must employ some of
the best marketers in the world. They always seem to have some kind of
health benefit like preventing heart disease or even weight loss. The
true fact is that 90% are filled with sugar, cheap ingredients and lack
fibre.
6.
Protein Bars - Many protein bars are worse than
chocolate bars. They never used to be that bad but the more they try to
mimic the "regular chocolate" the worse it has become. Using fillers,
sweeteners and some have even super high amounts of sugar alcohol
sending you to the bathroom after you finished the bar.
7.
Lemon Juice - This one was also a surprised to me.
Listen, actual lemon juice from lemons is very healthy but I'm talking
about the brand called Real Lemon. It's has sulphites in it. Many people
are allergic to sulphites and can get headaches, hives, heart
palpitations, joint pain and more.
8.
Ceasar Salad - This made the list because of the
overall calories that it has. At 90 calories per tablespoon for Ceasar
dressing and adding bacon bits and croutons you're looking at a salad
with more than 350 calories.
9.
Whole grain bread - Whole grain bread is just bad.
It's high glycemic. Offers nothing in terms of health benefits yet it's
advertised as the healthiest thing in the world.
10. Orange Juice - Filled with vitamin C. Who cares, so
are cough drops. The point is that with orange juice they have taken
out all the fibre to give you nothing but bad old sugar.
